Learning and exchanges marked the event

On Wednesday (04/30), at the Banco do Brasil Cultural Center in Rio de Janeiro (CCBB-RJ), the National Industrial Property Institute (INPI) held an event to celebrate World Intellectual Property Day 2025, with the theme "Intellectual Property and Music: Feel the Rhythm of IP".

Throughout the day, several roundtables debated IP rights and the universe of music, in parallel with the workshops, promoted by the INPI's IP in Schools Program, which presented games on the use of IP developed for students and teachers of elementary and secondary education.

The objective of the commemorative event was to stimulate the strengthening of the music industry through IP rights, recognizing the role of creators, inventors and entrepreneurs in building new sounds, styles and technologies that shape the future of music.

The importance of IP for music

The president of INPI, Júlio César Moreira, highlighted the relevance of celebrating World Intellectual Property Day, drawing society's attention to this very important issue, which is in people's daily lives:

- The music we listen to has patented technologies behind it, trademarks registered by artists and record companies, and records of industrial designs that protect the aesthetics of objects such as musical instruments, album covers, and even concert sets.

According to Moreira, the INPI is offering a unique and democratic opportunity for citizens to understand the universe of intellectual property, whose objective is to legally protect intangible assets that form the competitive advantage for entrepreneurs and companies.

He also highlighted the issue of sustainability and protection of the environment through technology in the invention of instruments that do not need to use raw materials in danger of extinction, such as the wood of the ebony tree and the ivory of elephants' tusks in the manufacture of pianos.

The general manager of CCBB-RJ, SueliVoltarelli, spoke of the importance of her institution hosting the World IP Day event, with the theme linked to music, precisely in a space focused on the discussion of Culture.

In turn, the reporting director of the Brazilian Association of Intellectual Property (ABPI), Rodrigo Affonso de Ouro Preto Santos, pointed out that, without IP, there would be an aggressive and unfair environment, making it impossible for artists to make a fair living, as a result of their creation.

In a video, the Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Daren Tang, spoke of the importance of the institution having chosen the theme IP and Music: Feel the rhythm of IP for the 2025 edition.

Finally, the first vice president of the Brazilian Association of Industrial Property Agents (ABAPI), Andrea Possinhas, stressed that the theme of music and IP goes beyond copyright, passing through patents, trademarks, industrial designs and computer programs.

World Intellectual Property Day

Every year, the world celebrates this date on April 26, with the aim of expanding the general understanding of intellectual property. In 2025, the theme set by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) was "Intellectual Property and Music: Feel the Rhythm of IP", which highlights how creativity and innovation, supported by IP rights, contribute to maintaining a dynamic, diverse and thriving music scene that benefits everyone.

The event at CCBB-RJ was promoted by the INPI with the Brazilian Association of Industrial Property Agents (ABAPI) and support from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Brazilian Association of Intellectual Property (ABPI).
