Introduction of CGPDTM

The Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trade Marks, GI ( CGPDTM-India) under the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion , Ministry of Commerce and Industry is responsible for grant of patents, registration of Designs & Trade Marks, Copyright, GI and layout design of integrated circuits in India under the ambit of respective Act and Rules. The Office is also responsible for the implementation of National IPR Policy and promotion of nationwide IPR awareness in collaboration and coordination with related offices.

The Indian IP Office has a brief history which dates back to almost 157 years of existence, and stands ona firm foundation. In the last two decades, the Intellectual Property System of Indiaunderwent several amendments and the present Acts relating to the Patents, Designs,Trade Marks and Geographical Indications came into existence as a result of suchamendments. Today's Intellectual Property Laws of India are a perfect blend of theInternational Treaty obligations as well as India's policy objectives commensurate withthe socio-economic priorities of the country that encompass the protection of publichealth and interest. In conformity with its legal changes, the organization has beenmodernised, and is being continuously strengthened in terms of infrastructure as well ashuman resources.

The Indian IP Office is located at various locations throughout the country. The four metro cities of Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai& Kolkata have an integrated IPO Building of Patent, Design and Trade Mark Offices. Apart from that there exists a Trade Mark registry Office at Ahmedabad and a “National Intellectual Property Training Institute” at Nagpur. The GI registry office and the “Intellectual Property Appellate Board”are located at Chennai.The Indian Patent Office is also designated as an ISA under PCT. The Indian ISA is located at Delhi along with IPO Office. The Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade mark office is located at Mumbai IPO and all the offices are administered from the Controller Generals Office.
