The BRICS Heads of IP Offices (HIPO) met on the sidelines of the 2012 WIPO General Assemblies in Geneva, Switzerland and agreed to advance the cooperation between the respective BRICS IP offices with a view to enhancing the value of IP and to ensure its contribution to the economic development and growth in the member countries. HIPO conferred to Coordination Group Meeting (CGM) the official status as a regular institutional body of the BRICS IP Offices' cooperation, serving as a platform for pre-negotiation and communication on cooperative projects, expected outcomes and arrangements of BRICS HIPO meetings. CGMs are convened and hosted annually by the chair office prior to the BRICS HIPO meetings.

During October 2023, CIPC-South Africa, hosted and chaired two CGM meetings in preparation of the 15th HIPO meeting. The meetings provided a platform for constructive and collaborative dialogue in the preparation of the 15th HIPO meeting which was held on 17 October 2023.
